CD REVIEW: BASTARD OF THE BLUES by HELIX

BASTARD OF THE BLUES by Helix
(Perris Records)

Canadian rock gods Helix are back with their new release, 'Bastard Of The Blues'. The band's 13th studio recording.  Brian Vollmer on vocals, Kaleb Duck on guitar, vocals, Chris Julke on guitar, vocals, Daryl Gray on bass and Gregory "Fritz" Hinz on drums. Produced by Aaron Murray and  written primarily with Sean Kelly (Crash Kelly/Four By Fate), the new album is a continuation of 2008's "Vagabond Bones" and also contains two songs from the follow-up EP 'Skin In The Game'. If you're a true Helix fan, you'll love the new record!! The guys are back with that classic Helix sound from the that we all fell in love with they came out in 1983. Great production, great tunes, great mix, the album just it just kicks butt on so many levels. Brian's voice sounds the best it has ever sounded and jumps right out of the speakers and in your face! Great guitar work from Kaleb Duck & Chris Julke. Daryl Gray lays down great bass parts, and Gregory "Fritz" Hinz keeps the rhythm pumping. The opening title track, "Bastard Of The Blues", is bump and grind rock and roller that will get your blood pumping. While, "Winning Is The Best Revenge", "Screaming At The Moon" and "Metal At Midnite", featuring Nick Walsh of Slic Toxic, are guaranteed to get your rocks off. Some of these songs just creep along and hit you like a sledge hammer like on  "Axe To Grind" and "The Bitch Is A Bullet". All eleven tracks offered up are winners and beg you to crank them up full volume like there is no tomorrow! In this day and age, it's so hard to find a band you grew up with, that continues to churn out real rock music. Helix make music that's straight up rock n' roll!! They do it for themselves, and for the fans that stick by them!! After all, isn't that what rock n' roll is all about? If you like rock music, this is great. If you like Helix, you will be blown away by how good they still are. It is great to see such a great band making outstanding new music in 2O14.  - Highly Recommended
